Platform Bed Plans – Platform beds are popular in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan. If you are in the market for a platform bed, drawing plans may be the best idea. They pursue as many variations as possible to have the certainty of the final choice is well thought out. The height of the platform is the most important decision to make since it determines the total height once the mattress is added. That makes the mattress an important factor too. The material used to build the platform bed does not have to be solid wood; slat works just as well.
Determine the desired height of the platform bed plans. Build the frame of the platform bed with solid wood if the height is less than 11½ inches. If it’s more than 11½ inches, rip four pieces of plywood with a table saw or circular saw to make the four frame pieces. Plan the width pieces to fit between the long pieces. Set them between the pieces of length at each end to form a square or a rectangle depending on the size of the platform needed for the chosen mattress. Secure one to the other, either with plaster screws or 4 pence (1 ½ inch) finishing nails.
Cut several pieces with a table saw or circular saw to fit inside the support frame to the platform. Keep them within 24 inches of difference for maximum support. These pieces can be either floating or fixed to the free frame. Measure the width and length of the platform frame. Cut the platform from a sheet of plywood and fix it to the frame with 4penny finishing nails. As an alternative, attach a piano hinge to one edge of the plywood and the frame on the platform bed plans with the screws supplied with the piano hinge and a variable speed drill and the tip of the screw. This allows access to storage space that would otherwise be inaccessible. Fix as many pieces of solid wood as necessary to cover the top of the frame. These pieces serve the same purpose as the plywood mentioned above. Secure the wood to the frame with nails or drywall screws.
