Oak Platform Bed – Imbue your bedroom with an aesthetic of elegant and minimalist design with a Japanese platform bed. The frame of the bed consists of a slightly raised platform, of wood where a mattress is placed. The simple design of a Japanese bed is a feasible home carpentry project. Build your own platform bed with a plywood of your choices, such as cherry, oak, maple or birch. Cut all 3/4 inch plywood pieces with a saw. Needed: 92 by 46 1/2 inches, 2 pieces 92-inch-by-6 1/2 inches, 2 80-inches-by-8 1/2 inches, 2 78-inches-by-14 1/2 inches, 2 74 inches-by-14 1/2-inches Sand all edges cut with 220 grit sandpaper.
Arm the base. Make a rectangle with the two 78-inch-by-14 1/2 inch boards and two of the 74 pieces by 14 1/2 inches. The other space two 74 by 14 1/2 pieces evenly inside the rectangle, like cross supports. Secure parts with wood glue and 4D finishing nails. Lay the two pieces 92 by 46 1/2 inches next to each other with the shorter sides spliced together. This is the platform. Center of the base ofthe oak platform bed. Attach the wooden to the platform using L-brackets along the inner edges platform of the base where the bed is locating. Use two L-brackets for each frame side. Turn the bed platform, right side up.

Glue the pieces 92 by 6 1/2 inches on the head and foot of the platform. Secure the pieces with type C clamps and fix with wood screws from the bottom of the oak platform bed to not show the screw heads. Glue, clamp and screw the two 80-inch pieces by 8 1/2 inches to the sides of the platform. It now has a cavity on the bed on which a mattress is laid. Sand the entire bed platform with 220 grit sandpaper. The corners of the sand will take down the sharpness. Vacuum and wipe down the wood with a slotted wipe to remove sanding dust.
